The exhibition project “A Question of Gesture”, curated by Alba D’Urbano and Tina Bara, professors at the Academy of Visual Arts (HGB) in Leipzig, takes place from 3rd until 10th December 2006 in the Leipzig Opera. It explores the specific elements of communication and exchange in media-saturated society - gestures as medium-bound body language. The exhibition - presenting the works of over 50 international artists and over 20 students and graduates of HGB Leipzig - is combined with contribution from various artistic disciplines (performance, dance, theatre, film, music) and a two-day symposium entitled Restrained Eloquence - Politics, Pathos and Philosophy of Gesture“ (Institute of Theatrology in Leipzig), as well as a series of lectures and film screenings dealing with the topic “Gestures of the Melodramatic“ (Academy of Music and Theatre in Leipzig). The project explores interactions and draws parallels between different disciplines.
In accordance with the positions within cultural theory which place central importance on the exploration of performativity, the curators of the project aim to establish a multifaceted representation and thereby enable a complex reception of diverse practices dealing with body language, which infiltrate various discursive fields within contemporary society. A central concern of the project is to create thematic links between different elements of the project, thus presenting body language and performativity as categories which inform varied artistic practices and cultures.
