Fall 2013 Curatorial Intensive in New York

This October in New York, Independent Curators International (ICI) produces the Curatorial Intensive : Curating Time-Based Media, a ten-day professional development program that offers curators the opportunity to discuss, among colleagues, the concepts, logistics, and challenges of organizing exhibitions featuring durational art, installations, performance, dance, video, film, and sound art. Topics under discussion include new formats for durational projects, collecting and conservation, remaking historical work, and commissioning new pieces. Central to all sessions will be conversations discerning audience and publics, working with artists, and the consideration of time and space in relation to programming.

Recognizing there are few opportunities for professionals to receive practical training and guidance while also working, the Curatorial Intensive is targeted toward self-motivated individuals—working independently or in institutions—who would benefit from a week of intensive conversations around issues and questions that arise for curators. Topics range from the pragmatics of developing a program and building working relationships with artists to the theoretical aspects of understanding how to turn a concept into a project and effectively communicate ideas.

Seminars, site visits, individual meetings, and roundtable discussions will be led by a group of international professionals that includes Philip Bither (McGuire Senior Curator of Performing Arts, Walker Art Center, Minneapolis), María del Carmen Carrión (Associate Director of Public Programs & Research, ICI, New York), Michael Connor (Editor & Curator, Rhizome, New York), Bradford Nordeen (Director, Dirty Looks, New York), Gridthiya Gaweewong (Artistic Director, Jim Thompson Art House, Bangkok), Chrissie Iles (Anne and Joel Ehrenkranz Curator, Whitney Museum of American Art, New York), Ana Janevski (Associate Curator in the Department of Media and Performance Art, MoMA, New York), Corey McCorkle (artist, New York), Renaud Proch (Executive Director, ICI), and Stephen Vitiello (artist, Richmond, VA).
